In Flanders and Brussels, several gender teams are active. These teams work in a multidisciplinary way, meaning multiple specialists collaborate in one place and cases are discussed collectively. This allows the social, psychological, and medical steps in a (gender) transitionExternal link to be well coordinated.

Some gender teams have a contract External link (convention) with the federal government. This means that sessions with a case manager, psychologist, or social worker are largely reimbursed. Contracted gender teams can also directly refer to each other for treatments or procedures they do not offer themselves. This means you only need to register with one gender team at a time. Choose a team that is practically accessible for you, for example in terms of distance or waiting time.

Below you will find an overview of the gender teams in Flanders and Brussels.

Ghent

In Ghent, you can go to the Centre for Sexology and GenderExternal link (CSG) at UZ Ghent.

Who is it for

  • Children and young people (9–16 years)
  • Young adults (17–23 years)
  • Adults (24 years and older)

How to register

Via the secretariat:

Since August 2025, the CSG has introduced a new registration procedureExternal link and a system of differentiated care. You can read more about this in this news postExternal link .

Location

UZ Ghent, Corneel Heymanslaan 10, 9000 Ghent.

Entrance 12, floor 6, route 1378.

Website

Centre for Sexology and Gender (uzgent.be)External link

Reimbursement

Convention applies since 2017.

Care offer

  • Psychosocial support, endocrinological care (hormone therapy), hair removal, speech therapy, fertility (preservation), voice surgery, hysterectomy (uterus removal), oophorectomy (ovary removal), orchidectomy (testicle removal), mastectomy (breast removal), breast augmentation, genital surgery (vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty, phalloplasty), facial surgery, and pelvic floor physiotherapy.
  • Nipple-areola removal or genital nullification* is currently not considered part of the care offerExternal link . This is because there is no scientific or clinically based evidence to perform these procedures from an identity perspective.

*In this procedure, parts of the genitalia are removed with the aim of achieving a 'neutral' appearance without distinct sex characteristics.

Process

After registration, you will receive a registration form that you can fill in. The form asks for some basic details, enquires about your care question, and any support you may be receiving outside of UZ Ghent. Based on that form:

  • you are placed on the waiting list for a first session with a psychologist, or
  • you can (from age 24 and with a referral letter from a Belgian psychologist or psychiater) make a direct appointment with a medical department of the CSG (for example Endocrinology or Plastic Surgery).

Your details will be processed, and you will receive a reply within a few weeks to arrange the next steps.

If you do not fill in the registration form, you will be placed on the waiting list for a first session with a psychologist. You cannot make a direct appointment with a medical department.

A psychologist guides you throughout your entire care pathway. Decisions regarding medical steps are made at the monthly multidisciplinary gender team meeting.

External referrals

The CSG accepts referrals from external clinical psychologists and psychiatrists. They can refer directly to a medical department within the CSG for the group of adults (from age 24)

The support by the referring practitioner remains active. This means that the clinical psychologist or psychiatrist who refers remains responsible for ongoing follow-up and aftercare in the context of the medical care question.

More information can be found on the CSG website (uzgent.be)External link .
